Step up to the Assembly Line! Our goal here is to take an honest look at the picks we make so we can figure out what works, what wheels, and to ultimately improve our drafting skills. Hopefully, our mistakes and successes can help you be a better drafter too!
For the first ever draft, we have the tail end of the DTK-DTK-FRF format. We’ll tell you our picks, but we’d love to hear your choices in the comments.

P1P1: My choices here were between Secure the Wastes, Coat with Venom, and Draconic Roar. Ojutai's Summons is also a strong pick, but not something I'd want to grab p1p1. Roar is the better card between the two pieces of removal, but I grab Secure the Wastes, having good experience in the card's flexibility and potential bomby nature during the late game. Admittedly, I was also swayed in that direction because I recalled Secure the Wastes being worth a few dollars in paper draft, and assumed it'd be worth a few tix on MTGO (unfortunately, that was not the case).
P1P2: After grabbing a white card out of the first pick, my first instinct is to grab Student of Ojutai here and run with it. However, after backing up and properly looking through the pack, I recognized that the stronger picks are Ojutai Intercepter and Defeat. If nobody else is playing white, Student of Ojutai will wheel anyway, and while Interceptor is a good card, I didn't feel like it was strong enough to take over the removal spell, so I took Defeat. In the back of my mind, I was also thinking that, with Secure the Wastes, I might be able to look at building some sort of WB Warrior deck.
P1P3: Another Student of Ojutai, but this time there's no debate on what to pick with Pacifism staring me in the face. Even if I weren't already in white, this woul
d be the best card in the pack. Coat is also very good, and Atarka Efreet gets an honorable mention.P1P4: This is the third pack I've seen a lot of green in, but Ojutai's Command is just better than all the other cards here. I still haven't settled on a second color yet, so I take it and decide I can hedge on blue, or splash for the card if worst comes to worst.
P1P5: Aerie Bowmasters is the best card here, followed closely by Lurking Arynx. However, I'm still not sure what I want to decide as my second color yet, so I pick up the mediocre Herald of Dromoka. This was clearly a mistake, giving too much weight to my early picks.
P1P6: Enduring Scalelord is the best card here, followed a bit by Zephyr Scribe and Dragon-scarred Bear. I grab the dragon and finally decide to hedge on green.
P1P7: Anticipate is probably the best card left in this pack, but I've seen a lot of green go around, and I have a feeling that's where I'm going to end up. I grab the Yearling here, deciding to nix blue and push WG. Sunbringer's Touch is also an interesting consideration, but between being a Sorcery and the fact that GW doesn't have many consistent draw engines, it's likely that the card would just sit dead in my hand much of the time, especially if I drew it in the late game.
P1P8: Having passed two Students of Ojutai, I grab the one here, even though the stronger card was probably Press the Advantage. That said, I've had very little luck with Press the Advantage, its mana cost often being a huge hurdle when trying to establish a solid board presence.
P1P9: I grab Dutiful Attendant here, still thinking I might make the WB Warriors theme work. The better pick would have been Shape the Sands for my sideboard, but having only grabbed 2 green cards, I wasn't completely convinced I'd be going WG yet.
P1P10: Sight of the Scalelords wheels around, and I take it here over the second Student of Ojutai. I've got a handful of 4-toughness creatures, and it wouldn't be difficult for me to get even more in my current colors, especially if I end up pushing a Bolster theme.
P1P11: Conifer Strider is the only pick left, and it's in my colors.
P1P12: I take Scaleguard Sentinels because it's one of the best common 2-drops I'm going to find, and its upside is fantastic if I can get more dragons.
P1P13: I considered grabbing Sheltered Aerie here, on the off chance that I decide to splash a third color, but my primary colors seem to be wheeling around well enough that I don't feel pressured into picking up a third color just to hit 23 cards. I cut the Zephyr Scribe instead.
P1P14: Resupply is my last card, which isn't really surprising. It's not a horrible sideboard if I run into a matchup where I need just a little bit more life gain, and it's not the worst thing to top deck in the late game.
